The name Highlander House honours the heritage that runs through our family and through Nova Scotia itself.
Nova Scotia is Latin for “New Scotland,” and the province’s Scottish identity and seafaring past has shaped the culture, the coastline, and the communities that make the South Shore so special.
Our own roots are tied to the Celtic and Gaelic regions, including Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, and we wanted the brand to reflect that sense of history, pride, and place.
The Latin phrase, "Per Mare Per Terras" means "By Sea and By Land” and is the motto for Clan Donald – a nod to our ancestors. It reflects the maritime strength of Scottland’s largest and most powerful Clan whose chiefs held the title Lord of the Isles.
After traveling the world and living abroad, we have come to deeply appreciate our Maritime roots and the unique beauty of the seaside Village of Chester. Built on the shoreline of Chester’s Back Harbour, Highlander House offers extraordinary ocean views and the refined essence of coastal living.
Upon arrival, we invite you to relax in your favorite Adirondack chair. Breathe in the clean salty air and feel the refreshing ocean breeze on your face. Listen to the lapping of waves against the shoreline and watch the sail boats carry your stress away as they head out the Back Harbour towards the many islands of majestic Mahone Bay.
Our sincere wish is that our guests feel the same sense of peace, relaxation and rejuvenation that this special place brings us. Thank-you very much for considering our home as a part of your travel plans.
~ The Owners of Highlander House

The Highlander House crest is more than a mark, it’s a statement of what we want you to feel the moment you arrive: this is a place with roots.
The shield shape represents heritage and permanence, a nod to history, tradition, and our desire to build something meant to last for family and for the next generation.
The bold saltire-style cross reflects Nova Scotia’s Scottish identity, a tribute to “New Scotland” and the cultural traditions that still shape this province today.
At the center is the maple leaf, grounding the story in Canada and reinforcing a simple message: Highlander House is proudly Nova Scotian.
The nautical elements bring the purpose of your stay to life. Chester’s sailing culture and our Back Harbour setting are captured in the sailboat and seabirds, symbols of freedom, calm, and that unmistakable coastal rhythm.
The anchor represents what we hope Highlander House becomes for you: a safe harbour where you can drop anchor, slow down, and feel restored by the sea.
And the “H H” monogram makes it personal, like a family signature, because this isn’t meant to feel like a generic rental. It’s an invitation into a tradition, and a gentle nudge to fall in love with Nova Scotia the way we have, then carry that story home and come back again.
